Sunday Soul Stroll

Baby, What Has Happened To Our Love - The Ringleaders - 1966 - M-Pac!

Ringleaders (Vandy Lane, Willie Hawkins, Bret Anderson, Eddie Donahue) are a sweet soul group that got together in 1964 in Saginaw, Michigan. They recorded this beautiful record ca. 1966 on M-Pac records, a subsidiary of One-Der-Ful, after having left their hometown shopping for deals unsuccessfully in Detroit and successfully in Chicago.
They sound so tight - especially the background vocals!! and apparrently a lot of soul collecting record hoards believe so as well being that it goes for mad money.

It's hard not to be proud of AGR's own BoogieMan's debut on NYC's famed WBAI this past Saturday night/Sunday morning, December 27/28th. Not only did BoogieMan (head seen 3rd from right) throw down a sure shot choice selection of funky disco delights on Rare Radio's marathon DJ session but he did so among greats such as legendary Paradise Garage member DJ Tomcat (pictured above second from right) also alongside Randy the Musicologist (right), DJ Monk One (not in photo), DJ 3D (not in photo), and the surgeon himself DJ Emskee (not in photo) . So much so listen to Emskee host and give dap on the outro about the BoogieMan even at the end of almost 10 hours of music.

River Euphrates

So I just discovered this very interesting thing. I don't know if I missed the fact that the Pixies song 'River Euphrates' is actually an Ike and Tina number. Or if perhaps Ike and Tina, compelled by Black Francis' songwriting, got back together to cover this number - Or,third and strangest of all, someone just took the song and did it over in an Ike and Tina style, on some ol' anonymous. Whichever way it went down, something dope happened. Check it out:

Brand Nubian - Dedication

One of the best Brand Nubian tracks, yes, a feelgood classic album cut in between a bunch of revolutionary 5%er tracks. I always loved the way James Brown and co. set off "Say it Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud" and Alamo and the SD's hooked this one up lovely. Whenever I need a fix of purity, I place this record 'pon the turntable and let it blast, it's magic.
The album is wit and wisdom. I first listened to this album on a tape someone made for me with this on the A side and X Clan on the b-side. Those were the days.

Before I get this wreck, I'd like to take a sec
To say this jam here is dedicated to some of my favorites

I'd like to dedicate this to PE,
I'd like to dedicate this to BDP
I'd like to dedicate this to the X-Clan,
I'd like to dedicate this to Heavy D
Kiss my mother bye before I hit the road of stardom
Put away my rhymes, make sure the pimps got em
Just cuz I'm a rapper, doesn't mean I'm not a fan
My favorite, Rakim, Big Daddy, Kool G and
LL who always keep the girls jingling
C'mon honey dip, you can jingle on my (Yo, cool chill)
When it comes to female rappers, bust it, here's a few
MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, and Linque
What more could I say, I wouldn't be here today
If the old school didn't pave the way
Hats off and I'll never forget
Cuz if it wasn't for them, there wouldn't be no rap shit
Back to the track of the new
For short you can call me MC Grand Pu
I made this splendid cuz that's what I intended
Don't try to break it cuz you just can't bend it
I got a bad habit, see I live hitting skinz
Well if hitting skinz is wrong then forgive me for my sins
C'mon Ak, I'm straighter than 6 O'clock
So what you oughta do is flow wit the flock
My sign is the fish, yo, also loving on my disc
It's cool, I got dismiss cuz I hated liverwurst
But here I am, a rapper, my best friend Pos the dapper
Tony X who I grew up wit in a jet so
Shake the motion if you got the notion
Puba rubs off on ya just like lotion
I'm not conceited, girls say that I'm attractive
They describe my love and that's being hyperactive
I'm just a brother who likes to romance alot
Look at me as the black Sir Lancelot
That's right, your knight in shining armor
If I went to college, then my major would be drama
Or theatrics is more like my tactics
If you want the proof then lay down on the mattress
Swing with the swinger, I can be a singer
Alamo controls the beat wit just one finger
If you wanna swing to this, you better take precaution
Alamo, when you hook it, make sure there's no distortion
Here comes the crew, better known as the babuloo bad boys
Who make much noise
To Express, no local stops
It's time to get fat and collect our props
Kamikaze like Japs, you roll a 7 in craps
And if you think that this is booty, yo, it ain't no half
Met Lisa Simms, she bought a gear from Vin's
The knucklehead got her pregnant, now she got twins
The type of brother to stand out, always keep my hand out
To help another brother, what is taught by my mother
Good to the drip drop and I won't flip flop
Straight to the tip top in this here hip-hop
My style varies and my vocal carries
To El Segundo where I seen Q-Tip
Sipping on colada wit this honey dip
So. c'mon baby, spend the money, don't save it
Cuz this jam here I dedicate to some of my favorites
(Some of my favorites, some of my favorites)

Hey yo, check this out
I'd like to dedicate this to Chuck Chillout
(I'd like to dedicate this to the Awesome Two)
I'd like to dedicate this to Red Alert
(And I dedicate this one to Biz Mark)
I'd like to dedicate this to De La Soul
(And this one goes to the JB's)
I'd like to dedicate this to EPMD
(I like to dedicate this to Kid Capri)
I'd like to dedicate this to Andre
(I'd like to dedicate this to Puffy)
I like to dedicate this to the SD's - Lord Jamal...
The whole ZULU NATION! Zulu's on you black...

Boys

This was a Bside from the Bela Lugosi's Dead maxi-single thing, on wax with Dark Entries also. True Artist came through with it, and a bunch of other records, one rainy weekend in 1985. I didn't have any concept of goth back then, and I don't think the band did either. They were considered 'art', postpunk, or indie music to the people I knew, although the term Gothic (in reference to music and fashion)was already being used.

All I know is when you're 13, mostly into pop-rap, and whatever weirdness you've dug up on your own - a record like this has the ill effect. At the time I perceived it as some kind of white punk rap, which it is in a way. Later I found out they were most likely skewering the wobbly Punk scene of 1979, with references to everybody from Siouxsie Sioux to the Clash. Fangsta.

This was the Aside, and there is not enough to say. Recorded in one take, as the legend goes, a bugged out marriage of Lee Perry and the Stooges;the birth of a genre now mutated into new forms, and a top 10 Halloween tune, if ever such a list were made. Undead, undead, indeed.
